Ever heard of Atlanta Georgia? No doubt, like most people in the United States, you have. And you probably know that Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia. But that’s as much knowledge about the state as many people have unless they live there. Keep reading below to learn a few more facts about Atlanta.

As stated earlier, Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia. It is also the largest city in the state, having just under 500,000 people is recently as 2015. This makes it one of the largest cities in the Southeast.

The city of Atlanta was created in 1937, just after the end of the Civil War. It was at the time considered the economic hub of the South. While it no longer has that honor today, it still plays a vital role in commerce in the South, and ranks eighth in the nation with a GDP of $270 billion. This figure ranks 40th in the entire world.

The city of Atlanta also attracts a large number of tourists every year, and ranks 13th in the United States out of all cities. A lot of this tourist activity can be attributed to the number of professional sports teams Atlanta has to offer. They have the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons football, Maj. League baseball’s Atlanta Braves, and even an NHL hockey team called the Atlanta Thrashers, which is the city’s most recent pro sports team and began play in the 1999 hockey season. But it’s not just sports that attracts people to Atlanta. There are other attractions as well. Many come for the museums and the historical landmarks. One of the more popular museums is the Atlanta History Center.

The Atlanta History Center occupies 33 acres, and is considered one of America’s top history museums. Housed there visitors will find Swann House, Kelly Smith Farm, and a huge collection of Civil War artifacts. If history isn’t your thing, you should check out the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located in the heart of the city, and is a floral paradise growing in a harsh urban setting. One of the garden’s more popular attractions is its rather large collection of orchid displays, which is said to be one of the world’s largest. If you’ve had a long day touring the rest of the city, the botanical garden is a great place to visit last so you can relax and enjoy the rest of the evening in a quite and peaceful setting.
